Sommavilla Sergio

Sommavilla Sergio

Sergio Sommavilla is an independent artist and sculptor born in 1951 in Brixen (South Tyrol, Italy), where he still lives and works, keeping his personal studio and depot in the historic “Zagler Schmiede” (the old Zagler smithy).

His artistic journey began in Urtijëi (Val Gardena), where he attended the local Art School under the guidance of Luis Piazza, embracing the philosophy of sculpting as a calm, meditative process. In 1968, he moved to Venice to study sculpture at the Magistero d’Arte. Living in Venice during the vibrant and turbulent late 1960s allowed him to immerse himself in modern sculpture; he drew great inspiration from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (discovering original works by Brancusi and Marini), the Venice Biennale, and the Academy of Fine Arts, where figures like Alberto Viani and Emilio Vedova taught. Alongside his artistic career, from 1971 to 2011, Sommavilla worked as an art educator in middle schools across South Tyrol (Toblach, Neustift, Brixen, and Klausen).

He held his first exhibition in 1983. Since then, his sculptures have been widely exhibited both locally and internationally. Highlights of his exhibition history include the “Core” exhibition at the Chateau de Bourscheid in Luxembourg, “Arche im Raum” at the Minoritenkirche in Regensburg, an exhibition at the City Gallery of Brixen, and the organization of the “See-Art” open-air exhibition at Lake Varna.

Sommavilla’s style is defined by an instinctive, profound dialogue with his materials. Over more than three decades, he has experimented with an extraordinarily diverse range of mediums: engobed terracotta, cast bronze, wood, and a vast selection of stones. His works feature hard basalt, granite, Chinese sandstone, Alabaster, Carrara marble, rare Belgian marble (sourced from the remnants of a Late Gothic altar), and Bellerophon Ulrici, a demanding local stone from his homeland. His creative process transitions from initial sketches in Moleskine notebooks to heavy studio work with grinders and chisels, allowing the final shape to emerge by listening to what the natural raw material reveals to him.

Egon Digon – Illusion and Irritation

The artistic work of Egon Digon is a fascinating journey into the world of geometric forms—a world he consciously dissolves, questions, and redefines. With great sensitivity, he explores the possibilities of distortion, transforming wood into expressive sculptures that challenge the viewer’s perception and expectations.

Through the deliberate deformation of basic geometric structures, Digon breaks their formal rigidity and imbues them with a surprising, almost organic softness. From his deep engagement with line, edge, and volume, he develops an independent formal language where precision and sensuality exist in a tension-filled balance.

These masterfully carved works bear witness to great technical dedication and a keen sense of detail. Upon closer inspection, a complex interplay between condensation and void, soft transitions, and sharp cuts unfolds. The deconstruction and reorganization of geometry create impressive visual illusions that keep the eye in constant motion.

Digon’s sculptures irritate and fascinate at the same time: they elude a single interpretation and constantly open up new perspectives. By dissolving the perceived rigidity of wood, he creates flowing, partly biomorphic forms that lift the material out of its heaviness and lend it an unexpected lightness.

In the continuous evolution of his work, Egon Digon consciously embraces change. It becomes the motor of his artistic practice—as an impulse for renewal, for open and self-determined thinking, and for an artistic process that restarts again and again with renewed energy.

Theo Design

THEO DESIGN

Carla and Simone Poletti are the founders and creative force behind Theo Design, an artistic-artisan workshop based in Spresiano, near Treviso.

Both holding degrees in Architecture from the IUAV University of Venice, they have shared a deep passion for art, nature, and visual experimentation since their student days. This academic background, combined with a fascination for organic forms, inspired them to establish Theo Design as a space for research and creative collaboration.

Philosophy and Creative Vision
Carla and Simone’s work focuses on the in-depth exploration of materials, color dynamics, and textures. Their approach transforms raw matter into living surfaces, blending contemporary aesthetics with a profound respect for manufacturing traditions. The name "Theo" pays homage to Theo van Gogh, symbolizing patronage, support for the arts, and the authentic value of handmade creation.

The Workshop as a Creative Hub
Far more than a traditional design studio, Theo Design functions as an artistic-artisan workshop and a gathering point for architects, designers, and artists. Here, Carla and Simone merge high-end craft techniques—such as majolica and traditional Japanese Raku ceramics—with a continuous dialogue across different artistic disciplines.

Production and Collections
Every creation by Theo Design is 100% Made in Italy, crafted either as a unique piece or in limited editions. Among their most iconic collections are:
– CuoreMatto: Distinctive sculptures in ceramic and Raku that explore the heart motif through complex color nuances and precious finishes.
– Furnishing Elements and Sculptures: Decorative objects, vases, and interior accents combining ceramic, metal, and high-impact artisanal finishes (including the Pinocchio and Chopin series).

Through meticulous attention to detail and a passion for raw materials, Carla and Simone Poletti continue to promote authorial design where every piece tells a story of dedication, nature, and hand-crafted excellence.
